Impact & Hurricane Glass in Clear Lake, TX
The most wind-exposed area we serve. Open water to the south-east means direct fetch, and the housing stock was largely built before impact glazing existed.
What Makes Clear Lake Different
Clear Lake is the most exposed market we serve, and the reason is geography rather than statistics. With Clear Lake itself and Galveston Bay immediately to the south-east, there is open water between a storm and your windows. Wind arriving across water has not been slowed by trees, fences or other houses the way it is twenty miles inland, and the bay-front and near-bay streets in Nassau Bay, El Lago and Taylor Lake Village feel that difference in every named storm.
The housing stock compounds it. Much of Clear Lake City was built through the 1960s, 70s and early 80s to house the workforce arriving for the Johnson Space Center, which means a large number of homes predate impact glazing as a product category entirely. Original single-pane units in aluminum frames are common, and so are large single-pane picture windows facing the water, the exact combination of maximum exposure and minimum resistance.
Waterfront orientation is also a design constraint, not just a risk. Nobody buys on the water to look at a frame, so the tension on these projects is between protection and sightline. That is the one situation where our premium aluminum tier earns its price: it can carry a much larger impact-glazed panel than vinyl can, so you keep the view while getting the rating.
Salt air matters here too. Hardware and fasteners on a bay-adjacent home live in a more corrosive environment than they do in Katy, and specifying finishes with that in mind is part of doing the job properly rather than an upsell.
The other thing that marks Clear Lake out is how people live here. Waterside patios, boats and entertaining space mean large sliding openings onto the water are in constant demand, but much of the 1960s and 70s stock was built with small openings and load-bearing rear walls. Enlarging those openings is structural work, not a window swap, and it is the most common Clear Lake project we get asked to quote after storm protection itself.

Learn moreClear Lake Questions
Do bay-front homes need a different specification?
Usually, yes, in two ways. Wind exposure is higher with open-water fetch, and salt air is harder on hardware and fasteners. Both belong in the specification rather than being discovered later.
Can I keep my large water-facing picture window and still get impact rating?
Usually. This is exactly where our thermally broken aluminum systems are worth the premium, because aluminum can carry a substantially larger impact-glazed panel than vinyl. We will tell you the maximum panel size for your opening before you commit.
Is Clear Lake in a designated windstorm area?
Windstorm designation in this part of Harris County depends on where the address sits relative to the designated boundary, and the bay communities are treated differently from inland Harris County. We confirm per address.
