Glass Wall Conversions, Replace a Wall With Glass
The project our Katy and Sugar Land clients describe when they call: take out the solid exterior wall, put in glass, and pull the patio inside the house.
Why This Is a Window Company’s Job
This is the highest-impact version of an enclosure project, and the one homeowners most often describe without knowing what it is called.
A glass wall conversion removes part or all of a solid exterior wall and replaces it with a glazed system, usually a large sliding or folding door assembly, so that the living space and the covered patio read as one room. Unlike a bolt-on conservatory, it changes how the existing house works rather than adding a box to the back of it.
It is also structural work. An exterior wall is usually carrying load, so the opening needs a properly sized header and the glazing needs to be tied into the structure correctly. That is the part that goes wrong when a general patio contractor subcontracts the glass, and it is the part we do in-house.
Built for How Houston Lives
- Large-panel sliding or folding systems from our own aluminum line
- Correct structural header sized for the opening and the load above it
- Thermally broken framing so the new glass wall does not become a heat source
- Permitting handled as part of the project, not left to you
- HOA drawing package for architectural review submission

How the Project Runs
We start at the wall, not at a brochure. The first visit establishes what the wall is doing structurally, how the patio was framed, where the roofline lands and what the review committee is likely to accept. That determines whether you are looking at a single large slider, a folding stack that disappears entirely, or a fixed-plus-operable combination.
From there it is design and approvals, then fabrication of the glazing package, then the structural work and installation. The glass is the last thing to arrive and the fastest part to fit, most of the calendar is design, approval and framing.
If you are mid-renovation, this pairs naturally with shower glass; it is the same trade and frequently the same visit.
Homeowners with a deep covered patio and a solid back wall, particularly in master-planned communities around Katy and Sugar Land where lot sizes and patio depths suit the conversion.
