Pine Hollow Ln, Houston: a Folding Door That Turns a Room Into a Courtyard

A multi-panel folding door across the back of a ground-floor room, photographed closed, part open and fully open. The room happens to hold a reef aquarium, which is a good test of a door that has to seal.

What a folding door is for

A sliding door always leaves at least one panel standing in the opening. A folding door does not: the panels hinge together and stack to one side, so almost the full width of the opening becomes open air. On this house that turns a ground-floor room and the courtyard outside it into one space when the door is open, and back into a sealed room when it is closed. The photographs go through the whole movement, from closed to stacked.

The trade-off is the stack. Folded panels need somewhere to sit, inside or outside the opening, and that space has to be planned with the furniture and the paving. It is one of the first things we check on a measure visit.

A room that has to seal

The room behind this door holds a reef aquarium, with its own lighting, pumps and a split air conditioning unit outside. A room like that wants steady temperature and humidity, which makes it a fair test of a door that has to close tight every time, not only on the day it was fitted. Hardware, weather seals and the threshold detail decide that, and so does installation. Read more on the folding doors page, or compare with lift and slide doors if you would rather keep one fixed panel and a wider pane.
